Writing Hack #26 of 33—Writing Hacks for Aspiring Authors Who Crave to Be to Published
By Deborah S. Nelson, Author-Book Coach-Speaker
How do you make your words jump off the page? With a multitude of instant media forms competing for attention, writing must be succinct and action-oriented. Our writing must connect with the reader to provide instant information or entertainment. So how do we exactly put action in our writing?
First thing, write as much as you can primarily in the active voice. The second way to write the action is by writing as if the action is happening in the present.
Two easy ways to write in the active voice—limit passive verbs and limit the use of possessive. Passive verbs are those such as: is, was, were, do, did, doing. Search your document for “do,” “did,” “doing,” and other passive verbs to replace them with active verbs, you will bring your writing alive.

Replace the words “have,” or “had”—and in ninety percent of the cases, your writing will soar. Find more descriptive, active words to replace the word “had” or “have” and other possessive words.
Along those same lines, avoid using “it,” and “there is” or “there was” and “there are.” These are sleepers. What is even more boring, is starting several sentences with “it,” which most certainly can build a rhythm that rocks the reader to sleep!
Lastly, use present tense as much as you can, to keep the action in the present moment. This will help to engage the reader in the action!
