Writing Hack #13 of 33—Writing Hacks for Aspiring Authors Who Crave to Be to Published
By Deborah S. Nelson, Author-Book Coach-Speaker
The most effective writers have a strong sense of organization. All of us are unique and the organization might look different for you. But the bottom line is writer’s heads need to be clear of turmoil in order to write clearly.
This means writers need to take care to protect their inner landscape. Distractions can be disastrous and therefore it becomes necessary to clear emotional conflicts and struggles. Clearly, a lot of writers take their material from their own life challenges. However, the challenge must be resolved in order to clearly create written alchemy from those situations.

This writing hack dovetails with writing hacks #8 and #9, the “Get Honest” and “Clear Your Mind.” Organize your life! This means get plenty of sleep, eat a good diet, do regular exercise, even if it is just a daily walk—and keep your writing area clean and organized. Make writing a pleasant experience and reward for your efforts to prepare your writing time and space. Becoming a successful writer has to do with you becoming “your best self,” and a certain amount of organization is necessary for you to be able to tap into your purest creativity.
Maslow’s Hierarchy suggests that survival is necessary before we can access the self-actualization levels at the top of that chart. Self-actualization starts with self-organization. Organize your life and your mind little by little and you can be sure this investment in yourself will pay off in the quality and quantity of your writing.
