Becoming a Published Author-Get a Raise!

Becoming a Published Author-Creating Author Authority

Make a Book using Print on Demand: Becoming a Published Author

Becoming a Published Author Builds Credibility & Confidence

It is nearly 2015, and some powerful buzz words are hitting the Internet Space–Google Author Verification, Search Engine Optimization, and Online Publishing. What do these terms have in common with becoming a published author? First, let us focus on the one word that dominates this game. That word is “authority.” Domain authority, page authority, and author authority influence the Google Search Engine in ranking your published works. Google ranking of your works translates to exposure and ultimately, sales. “Authority” as defined by Vocabulary.com:

authority

If you have the authority to do something, you have the right or power to do it. You are the big cheese. In other words, if you know more about a topic than most, you are an authority on that topic.

The Most Powerful Publishing Platform in History

When personal computers became popularized by the use of e-mail and the World Wide Web, at first none of us knew what it meant. In the beginning, government and educational institutions used e-mail as a communications tool. Once the World Wide Web created a platform for mass communications online, more uses developed over time. Online shopping such as E-Bay, PayPal, and other conveniences came into being. Over time the World Wide Web has evolved. Now in the 21st Century the Web has settled into a reality of its own. What is that reality? With great epiphany I have realized that the World Wide Web is the Publishing Platform of the 21st Century. The PC is the new ink and the Web is the new paper. Everything written is posted and published for the world to see. Understanding that the Web is actually a publishing platform will give you the ability to master the web. The undiscovered secret is understanding that the Internet is the most powerful publishing platform in history.

Authority, Author Ranking, and Publishing

If you want to gain traffic from Google, which translates into economic advantage, building Domain Authority and Page Authority is critical. Google’s goal to keep search engine results relevant to what searchers are seeking is their primary business strategy. This keeps Google advertising (some $19 billion or more each year) viable. What does this mean specifically to you as a business person, or online publisher? It means the ability to get your message to thousands and millions of targeted readers. It means the ability to get your information, services and products in front of readers and buyers. Becoming a published author can increase your authority rank with Google and get your message in front of people who want and need your products or services.

Becoming a Published Author and Giving Yourself a Raise

Becoming a published author positions you for an increase in income. With a published book, you may easily offer consulting, give workshops, become a speaker, and increase your fees in a related business.  Becoming a published author on the World Wide Web encompasses many forms of publishing such as the following:

  • Branded Blog Publisher
  • Online Magazine Publication
  • Publish a traditional printed book to sell on Amazon
  • Publish an electronic version of a printed book in Kindle
  • Publish an e-book and sell on platforms such as Smashwords. Kobo or Clickbank

Any of these methods of online or digital publishing can give your wisdom, knowledge, or entertainment venues exposure. Learning how to get your works exposure includes a learning curve, but an important step is to get Google Author Verified.

What is Google Author Verification?

I have written a 3-part series on how to get Google Author verification. This status relates back to the concept of “authority.” Once you become a “known authority” on a subject, Google will send traffic to your published information. However, you must prove to Google that you are that authority. Establishing authority and gaining recognition on the www is most easily done through applying to Google to become a Google Verified Author. Becoming a published author and letting Google know it is important. Once Google accepts you as a verified author, anything you write is cross referenced with your Google Author Profile. To learn more about this you may read my Google Author Verification articles which covers the whys and hows of Google Author Verification. The most important thing to know is, you must protect your original works that you publish online by registering them with your Google Author Profile, and build authority with Google by informing them of what you are writing and publishing online. Becoming a Published author online will give you an economic advantage if you take the steps to protect your works, and let Google know what you are writing about.

Writers in Iceland-One in 10 Published Authors

One in 10 Become Published Authors in Reykjavik

By Deborah S. Nelson, Author/Publisher Publishing SOLO & VRTG

dreamstime_xs_29855380After reporting on the new censorship challenges of the new self publishing giants such as Amazon, Lobo, and Smashwords, I wanted to lighten up. I have no idea what the statistics are in terms of percentage of self-published authors in Iceland, but the general environment sounds like a mecca for writers and published authors, whether publishing through traditional publishing houses, or through self-publishing venues.

Amidst the turmoil of the censorship issue boiling up in the self-publishing industry,  BBC News Rosie Goldsmith writes this enchanting article painting the picture what its like to be a writer in Iceland:

Iceland is experiencing a book boom. This island nation of just over 300,000 people has more writers, more books published and more books read, per head, than anywhere else in the world.

It is hard to avoid writers in Reykjavik. There is a phrase in Icelandic, “ad ganga med bok I maganum”, everyone gives birth to a book. Literally, everyone “has a book in their stomach”. One in 10 Icelanders will publish one.

“Does it get rather competitive?” I ask the young novelist, Kristin Eirikskdottir. “Yes. Especially as I live with my mother and partner, who are also full-time writers. But we try to publish in alternate years so we do not compete too much.”

Special saga tours – saga as in story, that is, not over-50s holidays – show us story-plaques on public buildings.

Dating from the 13th Century, Icelandic sagas tell the stories of the country’s Norse settlers, who began to arrive on the island in the late 9th Century.

Sagas are written on napkins and coffee cups. Each geyser and waterfall we visit has a tale of ancient heroes and heroines attached. Our guide stands up mid-tour to recite his own poetry – our taxi driver’s father and grandfather write biographies.

Public benches have barcodes so you listen to a story on your smartphone as you sit.

Reykjavik is rocking with writers. It is book festival time. Man Booker Prize winner Kiran Desai and Generation X author Douglas Coupland rub shoulders with Icelandic literary superstars Gerdur Kristny and Sjon. Sjon also pens lyrics for Bjork, Iceland’s musical superstar.

“Writers are respected here,” Agla Magnusdottir tells me. “They live well. Some even get a salary.”

Magnusdottir is head of the new Icelandic Literature Centre, which offers state support for literature and its translation.

“They write everything – modern sagas, poetry, children’s books, literary and erotic fiction – but the biggest boom is in crime writing,” she says.

That is perhaps no surprise in this Nordic nation. But crime novel sales figures are staggering – double that of any of its Nordic neighbours.

So what has led to this phenomenal book boom? I would say it is due to a crop of darn good writers, telling riveting tales with elegant economy and fantastic characters.

Icelandic sagas

First written down in the 13th century, the sagas contain some of the richest and most extraordinary writing of the Middle Ages.

They often depict events known from the early years of Icelandic history, although there is much debate as to how much of their content is factual.

Full of heroes, feuds and outlaws, with a smattering of ghosts and trolls, the sagas inspired writers including Sir Walter Scott, William Morris and WH Auden.

Iceland’s black lava riverbeds, its steaming, bubbling earth, with its towering volcanoes and fairytale streams also make it the perfect setting for stories.

No wonder JRR Tolkien and Seamus Heaney were entranced and Unesco designates Reykjavik a City of Literature.

Real Self-Publishing Costs to Publish a Book. Reasonable—But it is NOT Free!

Financial Benefits You Will Receive as a Published Author--and the self-publishing costs

So You Think You Want to Publish a Book

By Deborah S. Nelson, Author-Book Coach-Speaker

What a great dream! If your dream is a dream to publish a book, get ready for the most encouraging and truthful news. A key question you might have is: What are the real self-publishing costs to publish a book, and it is really free? On this site, I offer many tools, tricks, and tips to teach how to publish a book inexpensively, yet professionally.

First, let me explain why you may want to listen to me. Having immersed me in the brave new world of self-publishing for the past 10 years as an author/publisher, I can share a massive amount of experience, knowledge, and information on how to publish a book.

Why I am an Expert Book Publishing CoachDeborah S. Nelson, Author, Publisher, Speaker

If you understand both the long-term and short-term value of having a publishing coach, sign up for my complimentary coaching session. In my career prior to self-publishing, I traversed the printing, publishing, advertising, and marketing industries for decades. I ran a small ad agency that specialized in promotional items, printing, and a multitude of marketing and events projects.

While creating promotional campaigns, I learned printing and imprinting thoroughly and used some 85 printing processes onto hundreds of different surfaces—including glass, metal, plastics, woods, and papers of course—booklets, brochures, business cards, and books. Additionally, I worked for a traditional publishing house for close to three years and experienced book publishing from an inside perspective. Presently, I work as an author and publishing coach, teaching inside secrets to clients who want to glide through independent publishing smoothly, inexpensively, without frustration or embarrassment! I am well-qualified to teach a multitude of strategies about how to publish a book!

How to Publish a Book & What are the Real Self-Publishing Costs?

I know the inside scoop on all the printing and publishing processes—both old school and new-tech ways. So let’s get to it. We are going to start with the good, the bad, and the ugly of the independent publishing industry.

The Good: Self Pubishing’s Lack of Rejection

Self-Publishing’s big plus is the lack of rejection letters. Hurray! You won’t get any of them; and you won’t waste time getting them, either! Self-publishing with print on demand is doable and affordable, but check the real self-publishing costs before diving in. See an informative article about the realities of the time-consuming rejection process: Top 10 Rejected Best-selling Authors.

The Bad: How to Sell Your Self-Published Books?

Maybe you should have gotten that rejection letter. Now that you have published your book, you don’t know how to sell it!

The Ugly: It is not Free to Self-Publish!

Although Self-publishing is difficult and time-consuming, it is no longer nearly impossible to become a published author. Carefully consider these three basic steps to publishing a book in physical form: write your book, publish your book, and sell your book. And it is NOT FREE! Get that out of your head right now. If a self-publishing company tells you it is free, they are not telling you the whole story. So read on to learn more details for what you can expect the real self-publishing costs to be.

Free Self-Publishing accounts are Free—But that is Where it Stops.

Click Here for Your Free Self-Publishing Toolkit

It may be “free” to sign up for a print-on-demand account, an ISBN number may even be free, but those websites do not actually teach you how to publish a book. That is left up to you! At some point, you are going to have to pay a piper, somewhere, sometime.  That won’t be a pretty sight if not prepared in advance. I want to help you avoid finding yourself stranded in the middle of a publishing project, hopes dashed; and unable to publish due to lack of time, money, and other resources.

I explain to my publishing coaching clients and students that to write and publish a book is not for the faint of heart. Compared to having a baby, in many ways it is more difficult. Compare self-publishing to having AND raising a child. If not approached with a clear head and an honest heart, publishing can be extraordinarily expensive, the technical details could cause you to lose your mind; and if not properly budgeted, could even cause you to go broke!

Having said that, knowing how to publish a book using print on demand printing is miraculous compared to the days when there was no choice but to go through a traditional publishing house; and use an ordinary printing press. In fact, it is doable and affordable. And becoming a published author is a dream come true, absolutely exhilarating.

What are the Costs of Self-Publishing a Book?

The following figures are ranges; assuming you would go through the same processes that a professional publishing company. However, various estimated costs of self-publishing are detailed as follows:

  • EDITORIAL: Three editorial phases, content edit, copy-edit and final proofreading.

TOTAL EDITORIAL COST is about $750-$2400, depends on the length of the book.

  • BOOK COVER: Three phases, including front and back cover graphic design, the writer’s bio with Author Photo, and the “sales synopsis” of the book on the back cover.

TOTAL BOOK COVER COST about $200-$1500, depends on the intricacy of cover design.

  • INTERIOR DESIGN: Three phases, including font, header, and divider page design, image and graphic element design and placement, interior digital file preparation to printing specification.

TOTAL INTERIOR LAYOUT AND DESIGN COST, about $500-$2000, depends on the length and complication of design and graphic elements included.

How to Cut Self-Publishing Costs

Obviously, there are many ways to decrease self-publishing costs. At Publishing SOLO, we use tools such as Book Cover Design Template, and Interior Design Concept Worksheet. Thus, these tools completely plan the look and the placement of graphic elements, copy, and images before turning it over to the designer who charges by the hour. By using these tools thoroughly, the time the graphic artist takes to produce a digital file to print specifications can be as little as one hour for a book cover, and 5-10 hours for an interior design, depending on the size and complexity of the book.

J.L. Witterick’s Self-Publishes Her Own Book

By Deborah S. Nelson, Author/Publisher Publishing SOLO & VRTG

Many authors have dreams of being published, but so often their hopes are dashed by the rejection letters from the big publishing houses.  J.L. Witterick’s took matters into her own hands and self-published her own book.  She knew she had written an amazing novel based on a true story.  She was proved correct because after self publishing her novel it became a success selling 15,000 copies in the first six months.  After that, a traditional publishing house took notice and signed her to a deal to expand her distribution to other countries.

The latest self-publishing success to land at a major house is by a first-time Canadian author. J.L. Witterick’s My Mother’s Secret has sold 15,000 print copies in Canada since being self-published six months ago. The runaway sales – mostly via Amazon and Indigo – caught the attention of Penguin Canada, which rereleased the novel earlier this month (it appeared in the U.S. under the Putnam imprint). The book has also sold in Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and other territories. Witterick says she was initially unable to stoke publishers’ interest in the novel, which tells the fictionalized story of a real-life mother and daughter who concealed multiple Jewish families in their home during the Holocaust. “I approached some publishers, but not having much luck, I just decided to self-publish it,” she says. Putnam eventually acquired world rights to the title in a deal arranged without an agent. Penguin Canada editor Adrienne Kerr  says she views the book’s previous retail success as an indication of future sales. Read More Here…

Moral of the story is you can self-publish your own book.   Don’t Know how? Click the button and learn more.
