So You Think You Want to Write a Book

By Deborah S. Nelson

So you think you want to write a book?  That’s great! If you are passionate about writing, with digital publishing, now you can learn how to write and publish a book! I’ve written and self-published 14 books now, and its a blast! I love being a published author! In this article I am going to share the basic steps of how to write and publish a book in chronological order. You may think that the first step is the write the book, but it’s not.

The first step in is make a decision and an agreement with the very core of your being that you are going to write and publish a book. This can be a long journey, with a high learning curve. However, the most exciting thing going on now, is that we have digital publishing available to us, and that makes it possible for ordinary people to become published authors in 3-6 months…and that’s for a printed book on Amazon. If you going to write an e-book, that can be much faster. But this article will outline the basic steps of how to write and publish a book–a printed book.

Using Print on Demand to Publish a Book

Print on demand is the most significant development in the publishing industry except maybe for the printing press! What is print on demand? Simply put, it means that once you prepare your digital book file for printing, it is printed one book at a time–as ordered!

This means, that no inventory is required, and no expensive start-up costs are required to learn how to write and publish a book. With traditional publishing, a print run of at least 10,000 (depending on the type of book project) will be required to make the book cost-effective. And that required a sales and marketing commitment. With print on demand if you want to print a book about a niche subject, you wont’ need to sell 10,000 or more books for your book project to be financially viable. With print on demand the book is printed and shipped within days of the purchase and all the royalties go to the author, with a small piece going to the cost of printing. Print on demand makes it entirely affordable for determined ordinary people to learn how to write and publish a book.

Intent to Publish Agreement

When I coach clients who want to learn how to write and publish a book, the first thing I ask them to do is to sign the Intent to Publish Agreement. Writing and publishing a book is can be a long, intense, and time-consuming process. It requires your commitment. When a traditional publisher accepts a manuscript for publication, the first thing they do is create a contract. The Intent to Publish Agreement is a contract with yourself to self-publish your book. Feel free to download the Intent to Publish Agreement from our site, it is free.

How to Write a Book

We have written a few articles on how to write a book on this site (see article below); but step one in writing a book after you decide and make a committment to write, is to set aside a consistent time to write, once a day, once a week, or once a month. Make it doable and sustainable. Step two is to start by writing about what you know and love. Step 3 is to write without being concerned with anything but getting the essence of your story down on paper. Do not worry about spelling, grammar, punctuation–just write. Once you find a consistent time to write, start the practice of writing about what you know and what you love, and get your stories down on paper, the rest will take care of itself.  Below are 5 keys ingredients in how to get started writing your book:

Tell the Story: Focus on telling your story. Everything is a story, sometimes there are stories within stories. Let it Flow:  Just write. Write, Write, Write! When writing, do not worry about spelling, punctuation, neatness. Write Like You Speak: Be present when writing and envision a story from your day you want to share with yourself. Practice the Game: If you want to learn how to write and publish a book you simply need to practice writing first. Dump Perfectionism: In publishing, editors, copy editors, designers, and proof readers at the perfectionists. They clean up your work. Tell the story, teach the method, entertain your readers. Forget about being perfect.

Self-Publishing Parts of a Book

Once you have written your manuscript, the next step in learning how to write and publish a book, is to prepare the parts of the book. You’ll need the front matter which includes a preface, introduction, acknowledgments, dedication, title page, copyright page, as well as table of contents. The body of the book will contain your manuscript plus headers, illustrations or photos, dividers and graphic elements such as quotes, chapter headers, and text boxes. Much of these are optional.

I always recommend that a self-published author create an ad for their other products or services such as coaching or consulting, workshops or speaking. Additionally the back matter will include end notes, notes, About the Author, index, and various other options depending on your project. I have written an article on the parts of a book, and a book entitled the Publish Your Book Blueprint which will help you sort through all those details and options.

The Book Cover

One of the last key pieces of how to write and publish a book is the book cover. CreateSpace, one of the primary print on demand companies offers a free cover creator. If you are a bit artistic,  you can create a nice cover using their software for free. Depending on your budget you may want to hire a cover designer. This can be expensive, so do your homework, but if you are prepared with the key elements of the book cover, the cost will go down. Since the majority of the books are purchased online now, the book cover is even more important.

Your book cover may in most cases be a smallish icon, so be sure you find a strong graphic image for the front cover. On the back cover you’ll need a short author bio,an author headshot photo and a synopsis of the book written in sales copy style. Amazon is the biggest online bookseller, and they offer a feature where you can actually read the back cover of the book, so the back cover is still very important. In this article I have outlined the very basic steps of how to write and publish a book. Be sure and see these other articles that go into these different steps in more detail. If you are passionate about writing, we have all the tools, tips, resources that you will need to get started. See these articles: Createspace create your own cover

Learn How to Write a Book-Step 1

By Deborah S. Nelson

Learn how to Write a book and get it published

Learn to How to Write a Book with Passion!

Now that digital publishing has become viable, many people are considering self-publishing. But they have questions about diving into the process of digital publishing, the first of which is: How do I become a writer? Last night I was at a dinner, and the young man I was sitting next to brought up the subject of writing. He said a very common thing. “I would love to write, but I don’t think I have the skills.”  I could feel his passion and desire for writing. People tend to think they need to be a scholar with perfect English skills in order to write. This is just not true. Many people have “written” and published books, without even being able to write.  Nearly anyone can learn how to write a book.

What are the Parts of Writing?

There are two basic parts to writing: the art of writing and the skill of writing. Learning the or hiring the skill of writing is the easy part. Many people hire ghost writers to do their writing for them. There are authors who speak their manuscript into a recorder, which is then transposed to a Word Document, which is then given to the layout artist in preparation for publishing. Most corporate websites are written by hired writers, who know the skill of writing. If you are proficient in the skill of writing but have nothing to say, that will take you only so far. If you have something to say and share and you are passionate about it, then you are aligned with the art of writing. To write a good book that is worth publishing, and sharing, you will need to practice the art of writing. Whether fiction or non-fiction, you will need a story to tell.

Learn How to Write a Book: Getting Started

Practice. Practice. Practice. This is the best way to learn how to write a book. But how to start? The easiest way to start writing now is to get a journal. If possible, get a journal that is lockable. This is your personal journal and it is not meant for others to read. At some point, you may use some of the writing for other uses, but when you first start to write, it is key that you write only for yourself.  If you are better writing on a computer, start with a word document, and journal to your laptop. Write on a consistent basis, once a week, once a day, or once a month, whatever it is, be consistent. Keep these five points in mind:

  1. Tell the Story: When writing, focus on telling your story. Everything is a story, sometimes there are stories within stories.
  2. Let it Flow: When writing, do not worry about spelling, punctuation, neatness. Just write. Write, Write, Write!
  3. Write Like You Speak: Be present when writing and envision a story from your day you want to share with yourself.
  4. Practice the Game: Everything and anything that you want to learn to do simply requires practice.
  5. Dump Perfectionism: In the field of publishing, editors, copy editors, designers, and proof readers at the perfectionists. They clean up. You job is to tell the story, to teach the method, to entertain your readers. Forget about being perfect.
  6. Write One Chapter at a Time: If you focus on one blog article, or one chapter at a time, before you know it you will have written 12 -15 chapters and that is enough for a book.

Authors, Share Your Book with Millions of Readers

How to Organize Your Writing

Once your writing begins to flow, and articles or chapters are starting to pile up, organize your writing. If you are writing on a computer, save your writing to a certain file. I create a file for each book that I am in the process of writing. I do not write one book at a time, because I usually have several books in process. If you are writing in journals, you’ll sooner or later want to take some or all of that material and type it into a Word Document. Word is the word processing is the standard software used for writing and publishing. From Word it is easy to create an e-book, or a published printed book that can be sold on Amazon. Each of my book files contains 3 files: interior manuscript, book cover, and images. These are the three main parts to the book, and if you organized your WORD files this way, it will be much easier when you get ready to publish. Stay patient with yourself as you learn how to write a book, as it takes time to really master any art or skill. Organization will help you progess faster.

Publishing a Book

It won’t take long of writing consistently and you’ll be ready to publish a book. Not only can you easily learn how to write a book but you can learn how to self-publish a book, as well. Self-publishing is a great option for first-time authors. Realize there are three parts to bringing a book into the world: Writing the book, Publishing the book, and marketing the book. Sometimes people do not feel it necessary to sell or market their book, but at least publishing the book so they can leave it as a legacy to their family and friends is an important thing to do. Publishing SOLO offers many tips, tricks, tools, books and courses on this site to teach you how to self-publish. Once you get ready to self-publish the first thing to do is to sign an Intent to Self-Publish Agreement with yourself. When a traditional publishing company signs an author, the first they do is draw up a contract. If you are self-publishing, you’ll want to do the same. This sets the tone for deadlines, and for the serious commitment that publishing a book really is. ________________________________________________________________________________________________

How to Write & Print a Book–What are the Steps to Make a Paperback Book?

Write and Print a book or a paperback book

How to Write and Print a Book from Home!

Write and Print a Book from your Laptop!

By Deborah S. Nelson, Author-Book Coach-Speaker

Have you ever had an idea to write and print a book? I have. And, I have actually done it. As I dream, I envision a world when one day high school students will write and print a book at school. This project may be for an English class, or even a business course. Although this idea may sound far-fetched, in the 21st Century publishing your own book is now doable!

Write and Print a Book with Digital Publishing

Developments in digital publishing now make writing and printing a book doable on a small-scale. Using print of demand publishing, we now print one book at a time! That is pretty astounding when you consider that in the history of book publishing it was necessary to print 10,000 books at a time just to make one book affordable. Now, writers with a story to tell, inspiration to share, or knowledge to teach can write and print a book on their own.

How to Write and Print a Book–The Writing

Many people believe that writing a book is more difficult than it actually is. Due to the tendency for publishing houses to publish primarily scholarly or popular writers, “ordinary people” may feel unworthy to be writers. This is a sad development, since wise and skilled writers can share wisdom in their fields. Due to the sizable investment publishing houses require to publish a book, their focus on best sellers is understandable. However, not all books need be best sellers. With affordable digital publishing, books need only serve a specific niche. The faster way to write a book is one chapter at a time. Some tips for writing your book super fast:

Step #1 of Self-Publishing ChecklistFREE BLOG

Start a free blog on WORDPRESS. Notably, this a fast way to begin writing for the public. Get used to writing for an audience by writing a daily, weekly or a monthly blog. This way, each blog can become a book chapter.

Step 2 of Self Publishing Checklist with Publishing SOLO-writing & printing a book at homeWRITE AUTHENTICALLY

When writing, write like you speak. First, formulate raw ideas, then later polish with editing, grammar, and proofreading. Resist the temptation to assume how it sounds or looks. At first, say what you need to say!

Write on something you know and love. This is super important! Fuel your passion to write what you love by reading this article entitled: Write the Fire of Your Passion and Stay Inspired to Write!

Do not worry about what people say. Keep in mind, many people are too busy to read, and those who do read are appreciative of good information. Keep your EGO out of it. Write from your heart and not to impress.

Step five of the Self Publishing Checklist.CONSISTENT WRITING

Write consistently. Find a place, a schedule and  flow. If  you write  daily, a weekly, or a monthly, be consistent and make writing a habit. Surprisingly, this habit will help you complete a book in what seems to be no time!Flash Book Writing Kits by Deborah S. Nelson

Steps to Write & Print a Book at Home-The Printing

Once you are finished with the writing process, it is time to think about printing your book. This seems complex, but absolutely doable, and once you learn how, you may publish books again and again. The way to print your book at home is to make an account with an online printing company. Many of these refer to themselves as self-publishing companies.

Some of the top print on demand companies are CreateSpace and LuLu, and Blurb. Print on demand companies will accept your completed book file and literally print one book at a time. I have now published or helped writers publish over 100 books and here is a list of the basic steps how to get your paperback printed from you home computer:

Step #1 of Self-Publishing Checklist: How to Write and Print a book YourselfWORD MANUSCRIPT

First, bring your manuscript into Word. Next, run spell and grammar check. Also, if you want your book to come across as professional, send your WORD document to a content editor, who will (if professional) edit using the “track changes” feature. That way, you can see what they changed, and you can accept or reject their editorial changes.

Step 2 of Self Publishing Checklist with Publishing SOLO-write and print a book using print on demandPRINT ON DEMAND

In my experience, CreateSpace offers the easiest and most advanced print on demand structure. Additionally, their customer service is thorough and mostly human. Start a Print on Demand account for free with CreateSpace. Though there are many other print on demand companies, I can only help my clients with the venue that I know.

Self Publishing Checklist--Step 3, Details of writing and printing a book on your own.ISBN NUMBER

If you select the free ISBN number in the CreateSpace account, CreateSpace will be shown as the publisher. However, if you want a custom ISBN number, you will need to become an independent publisher through Bowker. Then, select the option in CreateSpace to pay extra for your own ISBN number, which will list you as the publisher.

Steo 4 of the Self Publishing Checklist by Deborah S. NelsonFRONT & BACK MATTER

Once you have written the central content of your book,  next you need to create front matter. This includes pages such as title page, copyright page, table of contents, dedication, preface, and other informational pages. For step-by-step help, see my Book Blueprint available for sale on DreamtoPublish.com to get a thorough understanding of these options and their chronological order. Complete these and add to your WORD document. You may try to upload your raw WORD document to CreateSpace but I suggest you hire a professional graphic designer to create the book interior and produce a print ready PDF digital file for uploading. Write, Publish & Sell a Book at Home

Write and Publish a Book from Home Online

By Deborah S. Nelson, Author-Book Coach-Speaker

How to Publish a Book at HomeThe world of publishing has dramatically changed in the past 5 years. Once an arena almost exclusively granted to the scholarly, publishing a book is now possible for anyone who can read, write, and has a computer and an online connection.

If you have a story to tell, a business method to teach, a journey to chronicle, or even art or photographs to share, you can write, publish and sell a book from home using the online venue.

How to Write and Print a Book at Home

Keep in mind there are three stages to bringing a printed book to the mass market:

  1. Writing the book ( see our article on how to write a book fast
  2. Publishing the book (for more detail see our article that teaches how to publish a book from home)
  3. Selling the book (see my article on marketing strategies for selling self-published books)

Writing a book can take some time. My best advice for writing is to write about what you love and know, and do not be concerned with grammar, spelling, or proofreading until after you have written from your heart. Professional editors and proofreaders can be hired later on. The important thing is to get the gist of what you have to share down in writing. Some people are intimidated by writing. As a publishing coach, when someone is having a difficult time writing, I suggest using a tape recorder. Then later on the taped verbiage can be automatically translated (using automate software) and made into a Word document. This costs a little bit of money, but well worth it if you are finding yourself procrastinating the writing even though you very much want to publish a book.

How to Print and Publish a BookHow to print and publish a book at home

The first step is to get your book written into a Word document form. Then, hire a professional content editor to go over your manuscript with fresh eyes to make sure that everything flows in chronological order, that facts and figures our consistent, and that what you say makes sense. Sometimes it makes sense to you and no one else. This is because you have a lot of knowledge about the subject, and take certain concepts or underlying principals for granted. A good content editor will flush out these inconsistencies and ambiguous statements. Next, I recommend signing up for a print on demand account to get your book printed. You will submit the digital files for printing, after you have prepared the interior of the book and the book cover to the specifications required by the print on demand company. In using print on demand method, you will submit your book file for publication, and once approved, it can be made available through Amazon for purchase. Print on demand means they have your digital book file ready, and when a book is ordered it gets printed that day or soon thereafter, and shipped out to the customer who bought it. If you need a print on demand company to take your book from manuscript, get an account for with CreateSpace, the wholesale printing arm of Amazon.com, “Earth’s Largest Bookstore.”

How to Sell Self-Published Books

Best Self Publishing Companies and selling self-publishedbooks

Self-Publishing a book. How to sell and market self-published books

Some of you will want to know how to sell your books. Others simple want to make a few copies for Christmas gifts, and to leave a legacy for their family for generations to come. Either way, often new authors jump to the conclusion that they need to go out and do book signings at books stores. This is an old school model which produces little success for self-published authors, since the majority of books are bought online and not in physical bookstores. The best approach is to make yourself  known as the expert in your niche online. Join lots of forums where people are trying to learn about the subject that you are writing about. If you are writing fiction, be sure and set up an author profile on Goodreads, Amazon, and Author’s Den. This way you make yourself and your books known to the community of readers who love to read and are more likely to buy books online. See about getting on radio shows, or podcasts, and make yourself available to speak at local business networking events or other types of gatherings. They may not pay a fee, but be sure and arrange to bring books to sell at the back of the room when you finish your talk. An author friend of mine did this often, and came away with $200-$300 in her pocket after giving just a one-hour talk.

“Broke-Ass Bride” From Blog to Book!

Blog to Book and Rags to Riches

Dana LaRue’s Lesson in How to Write a Book

Broke Ass Bride, by Dana LaRue, a blog to book success

Self-Publishing

From blog to book is Dana LaRue’s proven new method for writing and publishing a book. Here’s how it all started. When aspiring actress 30-year old Dana LaRue went searching on the Internet for budget wedding items and couldn’t find any, she started Broke-Ass Bride, a blog for budget wedding ideas.

Much to her surprise, her authentic writing about a money is mum subject, hit a nerve. There were plenty of women also looking for ways to create a budget wedding. Within a short time Dana’s blog was recognized by Google as one of its “Blogs of Note” in 2009. The Wedding Channel called it the “best budget wedding blog” of 2010. Today, the Broke-Ass Bride Twitter page has over 29,000 followers.

Ready, Set, Go!

Boost your earning power & social currency by becoming a published book author in record time.

With loads of fans and readers, naturally what followed was the book, Broke-Ass Bride Wedding Guide, published by Random House. the book hit the bookstores just last month. For more, on LaRue’s Broke-Ass Bride story, book see the article in the Deerfield Review:

“I was stunned that there was traffic and, all of sudden, I had an audience I didn’t expect,” she said. “I just sort of wrote in a way that felt natural to me, and people appreciated it.”

Wedding fever spread across the Internet. Google recognized TheBrokeAssBride.com as one of its “Blogs of Note” in 2009. The Wedding Channel called it the “best budget wedding blog” of 2010. Today, the Broke-Ass Bride Twitter page has over 29,000 followers.

LaRue’s sassy online musings eventually blossomed into a book deal with Random House, and “The Broke-Ass Bride’s Wedding Guide” hit bookstores Dec. 17 just in time for the peak engagement season.

Included in the 256-page paperback (also available on Kindle) are hundreds of budgeting tips and cost-saving ideas LaRue first explored on her blog. For instance, why LaRue didn’t rely on online calculators or formulas to determine how much to allocate to each wedding expense.

She recommends couples write out their priorities separately, share their ideas, and then compromise about where to put most of their money. Whether it’s flowers, food or entertainment, “make the wedding represent what matters most to you,” she advised.

The blog’s most popular posts discuss strategies for negotiating with vendors.

“No one tells you how to do it,” LaRue said. “Women especially aren’t empowered to take the lead on that.”

She would also like to see more modern-day brides try bartering for better deals. She landed her custom wedding dress for half the price in exchange for helping out in her designer’s shop.

Another strategy LaRue found useful was sharing decorations (and thus costs) with others who are getting hitched. The expense and waste automatically get halved.

Getting a newlywed’s used items, like dozens of glass votive holders, also helps keep a budget in check.

“It’s a really effective and great way to save money and be eco-conscious, but also to make connections with other brides,” she said. “I love the idea of passing objects from wedding to wedding and them being infused with all this great spirit.”

LaRue said her wedding in 2009 was not completely flawless, but it sure was fantastic. TheBrokeAssBride.com got an even bigger boost in readership after photos from the day were posted.

It was with sadness, then, that she later announced to her readers that she and her husband – who also contributed regularly to the site – were separating after 3-1/2 years of marriage.

“We didn’t fail,” she wrote online. “It just didn’t work out.”

LaRue said, in retrospect, she was “ready to plan the perfect wedding but not the perfect marriage.”

The divorce was amicable, she said, and she holds no regrets.

“It’s amazing the way that your journey takes shape,” she said. “You appreciate the elegance of hardships.”

With her first book hot off the presses, LaRue, now 35, continues to grow the Broke-Ass Bride brand. She has two full-time staff members helping with the site, and is in the midst of launching a second lifestyle blog centered on her interests.

She’s also fallen back in love, and is planning a fall wedding.

This time will be different, LaRue believes.

“I’ve grown up quite a bit,” she said. “It won’t be as ‘broke-ass’ an approach as much as financial-savvy so we don’t expend more than we need to.”

Published teachers, entrepreneurs, and celebrities make more impact and more money. From blog to book is just one way how to write a book. Read this article to learn other methods on learning how to write your first book.

Since leaving rehab last July, she has continued to be sober, and has also moved away from Hollywood to New York City. Linday has also connected with Oprah with a deal for an eight-part documentary series about her post-rehab life for her Oprah’s network. Mirror has report this story last month:

Get ready for what could be one of the best literary classics of all time – Lindsay Lohan is writing a tell-all book.

The troubled actress met with literary agency Waxman Leavall in New York last Thursday to discuss the project. Although the book is in its early stages, Lindsay started it as a series of journal entries while in rehab.

The book is expected to see Lindsay open up about every aspect of her life including becoming a child star, allegations of drug use, relationships with famous people – including her same sex fling with DJ Samantha Ronson – legal troubles and rehab stints, her most recent of which saw her complete 90 days of court ordered treatment in California.

Since leaving rehab at the end of July, Lindsay has sworn off drinking and partying and moved from Los Angeles to New York.

It seems it’s not just her life she wants to tell us all about

However, earlier this month she was accused of ordering a friend to beat up socialite Barron Hilton at a party in Miami, although witnesses maintain she was sober at the party.

Journalist Lindsay MaHarry wrote: “Due to her probation, and the $2 million sobriety contract with Oprah [Winfrey], she was laying low, firmly on the wagon.”

After leaving rehab, Oprah helped Lindsay turn her life around, and inked a deal for an eight-part documentary series about her post-rehab life for her OWN network, which reportedly includes a clause that Lindsay must remain clean and sober at all times.

Oprah has said of the star: “I believe that she believes that she is ready to move forward in her life. We’ll see. I’m anxious to see whether or not this young woman … will be able to allow us into her life and let us see the trajectory of trying to put the pieces back together.”
