Writing Hack #34—How to Cure Your Writing Hangovers—Yoga for Writers

Writing Hacks for Those Craving to Publish: Writing Hack #34 Yoga for Writers by Deborah S. Nelson

Writing Hack #34—Yoga for Writers; Writing Hacks for Aspiring Authors Craving to Publish

By Deborah S. Nelson, Author-Book Coach-Speaker

I want to share a unique writing aid—Yoga for Writers! For three years I wrote nearly non-stop. Oh, the aches and pains! The muse so inspired me that I considered the bathroom break as a rude but necessary interruption. This is what can happen when seized by a writing streak in the Caribbean–or when the mind forgets the body during an inspired writing session. The non-stop inspiration was glorious, but my body paid the price. That is, until I discovered Yoga for writers!

Click Here for Your Self-Publishing ToolkitWhen the muse was fully operational, I wrote 12-14 hours a day 7 days a week! However, now, I am lucky if I can steal 2 or 3 hours a day to write. This is due to the time required for infrastructure and marketing. A few years ago, building a website was faster, easier, and cheaper than owning-p[=[ a brick and mortar store. Now, maintaining an Internet presence is expensive and complicated.

Yoga for Writers is Saving My Body

But I digress. I return to Yoga for Writers. What a wonderful discovery! My body took a great toll from writing for all these years. I wrote and published several books in those days, and the books have taken good care of me. However, a couple of years ago, I had to acknowledge a “crick” in my neck which was so severe it leads to numbness and tingling in my left pinkie. Then, a year later, my thumbs started experiencing a tunnel carpel situation.

Not one for traditional medicine, I went to the chiropractor for my neck for about a year. In addition, I added monthly massage to my healing routine. It took a year and a half, and the crick in my neck softened and disappeared. But, I realized that I needed more than that to reverse all the unnatural tension in my body. I needed prevention—daily prevention.

Yoga for Writers Keeps Your Writing Flow Going

Enter YOGA. Yoga in its gentle but firm approach has helped me to unwind the tension from the 20 books I have written over the past 10 years! At first, having worked out as a body builder, Yoga seemed at first to be very minimalistic. However, after a few sessions of trying Yoga, I discovered its power. The gentleness of it keeps me in my writing mind.

Now that I am a Yoga enthusiast, what is even more exciting is a new Yoga practice introduced on YouTube by Adrienne. She has made a special half-hour yoga practice for writers! This is fantastic. As an aspiring writer and publishing coach, we need to get up every few hours and do a little yoga to keep our bodies from clenching up into a ball in various places.

I love how Yoga can help my hands and wrists and neck and lower back extend, and unwind. If you spend more than 3 or 4 hours a day writing, be sure and give Adrienne’s Yoga for Writers a chance!

Writing Hack—First, the Art of Writing—the Craft of Writing Beautifies the Art

33 Writing Hacks for Those Craving to Publish: Writing Hack #27 Write the Action by Deborah S. Nelson

Writing Hack #27 of 33—Writing Hacks for Aspiring Authors Who Crave to Be to Published

By Deborah S. Nelson, Author-Book Coach-Speaker

Now that your writing is passionately flowing stories with excitement and action, let’s focus on how to polish your writing. Understand that the “art of writing” and the “craft of writing” are different mindsets. For best results do these different types of work in phases so that you are not demanding your mind to shift back and forth from the “art” to the “craft.” If you have not read Hack #10 Art and Craft of Writing you might want to review that tip now.

Click Here for Your Self-Publishing ToolkitThe writing industry offers many options to polish your writing. The three main ones include content editing, copy editing, and proofreading. I find that I can easily edit my own writing, but only if I wait a few weeks or months, after writing it. Content editors charge from $75-$100 an hour. However, this is a cost I do not want to incur. Therefore, I have learned how to edit, and consequently, also to self-edit. The key to effective self-editing is to edit with a fresh mind, and fresh eyes, which requires letting your writing sit for at least 3 weeks or longer.

Are Your a Wannabe Writer? Try 33 Writing Hacks for Those Craving to Publish by Deborah S. Nelson

I wrote a mini-course, 10 DIY Self-Editing Tips for a Smoothly Written Ride, which is phenomenal for saving hundreds and thousands of dollars in editing. As for copy editing, and proofreading, I suggest hiring a specialist from one of the freelance sites. These are very detailed types of work, and editing takes ongoing practice in order to develop the eye and mind to catch the details of the work.

Writing Hack—Most Writing is Boring—Engage Readers by Writing the Action!

33 Writing Hacks for Those Craving to Publish: Writing Hack #26 Write the Action by Deborah S. Nelson

Writing Hack #26 of 33—Writing Hacks for Aspiring Authors Who Crave to Be to Published

By Deborah S. Nelson, Author-Book Coach-Speaker

How do you make your words jump off the page? With a multitude of instant media forms competing for attention, writing must be succinct and action-oriented. Our writing must connect with the reader to provide instant information or entertainment. So how do we exactly put action in our writing?

Click Here for Your Self-Publishing ToolkitFirst thing, write as much as you can primarily in the active voice. The second way to write the action is by writing as if the action is happening in the present.

Two easy ways to write in the active voice—limit passive verbs and limit the use of possessive. Passive verbs are those such as: is, was, were, do, did, doing. Search your document for “do,” “did,” “doing,” and other passive verbs to replace them with active verbs, you will bring your writing alive.

Are Your a Wannabe Writer? Try 33 Writing Hacks for Those Craving to Publish by Deborah S. Nelson

Replace the words “have,” or “had”—and in ninety percent of the cases, your writing will soar. Find more descriptive, active words to replace the word “had” or “have” and other possessive words.

Along those same lines, avoid using “it,” and “there is” or “there was” and “there are.” These are sleepers. What is even more boring, is starting several sentences with “it,” which most certainly can build a rhythm that rocks the reader to sleep!

Lastly, use present tense as much as you can, to keep the action in the present moment. This will help to engage the reader in the action!

Writing Hack—Truth is Stranger than Fiction. Write Your Life Story as a Novel.

33 Writing Hacks for Those Craving to Publish: Writing Hack #25 Your Life is a Book—Publish Your Journal a Book by Deborah S. Nelson

Writing Hack #25 of 33—Writing Hacks for Aspiring Authors Who Crave to Be to Published

By Deborah S. Nelson, Author-Book Coach-Speaker

A few new writers have experienced an amazing set up of circumstances and their life is ripe for an autobiography. Take the example of Helen Keller, Steve Jobs, John Adams (second US president), and other people who experienced high-level life stories. You do not need to be well-know, but if your life story is one that has overcome impossible odds and obstacles, then your life can be a book. If your life has been full of adventure, action, and drama, that could be great material for a novel–or a series of novels.

Click Here for Your Self-Publishing ToolkitThe challenge of this is that you probably need to have kept a journal during the times you faced these dramatic odds. If you try to remember everything five or ten years later, this will be quite difficult. In order to write an engaging, inspiring autobiography, it would be best to work from a journal, notes, or a diary. If you had written a blog during that time, that could be some great material from which to resurrect the story in a fairly accurate way.

Are Your a Wannabe Writer? Try 33 Writing Hacks for Those Craving to Publish by Deborah S. Nelson

However, if you love to write fiction, you can use your life experience for the basis of a novel. Many novels are based on a true story, but of course, the artistic license can be taken with events, times, places, and the leading characters in the book.

Writing Hack: What’s Your Life Story? Share Your Adventures & Be the Hero

33 Writing Hacks for Those Craving to Publish: Writing Hack #24 What’s Your Life Story? by Deborah S. Nelson

Writing Hack #24 of 33—Writing Hacks for Aspiring Authors Who Crave to Be to Published

By Deborah S. Nelson, Author-Book Coach-Speaker

A certain number of writers have quite a life story to tell. However, you might not want to write just one book on your life story. Break it up into sections, and see if you could get a few books going. If your life has been super adventurous, consider writing a series.

Click Here for Your Self-Publishing ToolkitYou could embellish your various life stories to create a fictional series from the individual stories. Practice writing one chapter of your life to see how it reads. Take it a local writers group for feedback. If you don’t have a local writer’s group that you feel you can trust, set up a half-hour consultation with me. More on that below.

Always remember, your reader knows nothing. Your words must paint the backdrop, and fill in the details as well. Too many details are distracting and too sparse details will not keep the reader’s interest.

Are Your a Wannabe Writer? Try 33 Writing Hacks for Those Craving to Publish by Deborah S. Nelson

Here is a good trick when telling a long story. Drag an imaginary magnifying glass with you as you write. Magnify the details, and word pictures to create the present moment as you write. You want to place your reader into a fresh new moment as they read along. Keep it fresh with details but continue to paint the backdrop with broader word images, so that the details have context.

Your life stories are rich content for a multitude of articles, books, and short stories. Use this material to touch the reader with your wisdom and experiences.

You may have already started a blog and if you have, that is great! At this point graduating from a journal to your own blog would be a great step. I would not suggest doing it earlier because I am writing this to beginning writers, as well as intermediate and advanced authors. I do not want the beginning writer to be asked to write publically until they have had experience writing privately.
